Embryo Artificial Synthesis
Scientists have successfully grown a mouse embryo in the lab using only stem cells. This indicates most importantly that this procedure could be eventually applied to grow artificial human embryos. Researchers have extracted the embryonic stem cells and the extra-embryonic trophoblast stem cells, which will form the placenta, from a mouse. Besides this, see our post on the Synthesis of Artificial Embryos is a Reality now.
Artificial Embryo Summary
- Breakthrough – Without using eggs or sperm cells, researchers have made embryo-like structures from stem cells alone. Therefore, most importantly this is providing a whole new route to creating life.
- Why It Matters – Artificial embryos will make it easier for researchers to study the mysterious beginnings of human life. Therefore, they’re stoking new bio-ethical debates.
- Key Players – University of Cambridge; University of Michigan; Rockefeller University
